Maidenhair Falls

Suprisingly accessible, you won't find this on any map.  Take forest service road 2312 from the south-east end of Wynoochee Lake.  About 6.5 miles in - you will see a bridge over Wynoochee Creek.  Cross over and park at the base of the bridge.  From there - you'll find a trail leading to the Falls, a 3.5 mile moderate hike.

Install OS X Lion vs:Upgrade

I finally managed to download Apple's latest OS "Lion" from Apple's new Mac App Store.  Although Apple claims the pre-requisites are OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, this is really only required to get on the App Store and download.

I've always avoided OS upgrades, preferring a fresh install.  This *is* possible with Lion:

1) Immediately after downloading, open your Applications folder and right click the Lion Installer, select Show Package contents from the menu.
2) Browse into Contents then Shared Support folder.  You'll see a disk image - InstallESD.dmg.  Copy this file to another location
3) Open Disk Utility, click Burn on the toolbar then select InstallESD.dmg

Finally, if installing onto an un-partitioned drive - the initial installer window will give you the opportunity to run the Disk Utillity, do it there - curiously, you will not be able to access it later....

End of an Era

Could this be considered the End of the Film Era?  Certainly for Kodachrome.  In any case, a good excuse for another cool T-Shirt......

Gracing the High End

A true workstation class machine has important distinctions over other fast personal computers.  Probably the most important is the requirement for ECC memory support; large or even huge memory sets are common in workstation applications, such as CAD/CAM, Database/Financial Modeling and increasingly, Imaging.  Non ECC memory error rates are high enough to begin to put into question the validity of the working set of data - unacceptable.

Goat Rocks Wilderness

This is from our most recent hike up in the Goat Rocks Wilderness area of SW Washington.  This was captured from Hawk Point (8,800') at the northernmost reach of Goat Ridge.  The Trail detail at right is from the lower right corner of the panorama.

Mt. St. Helens

Although late afternoon is *not* my favorite time to shoot, we found the harsh lighting of the terrain around Mt.

St. Helens to be viisually stunning.  Also unusal was the lack of haze.

This was shot as a series of 14 shots on my well worn Canon 30D, 1/60 sec at f/18, ISO 100, 39mm.  Visible from this viewpoint at the Johnson Ridge Observatory are Mt. Adams and Spirit Lake at the left.

Canadian Rockies

Our trip this year included Jasper and Banff National parks in Canada, followed by a quick traverse through Glacier National Park.  We experienced typical mountain weather during the 7 days spent in Canada.  Despite the clouds and gloom on a couple of days, our patience was rewarded with opportune moments of sun through broken clouds.  A couple of mornings and one evening offered perfect light.  Many of the images were shot as panoramas, allowing great resolution at larger print sizes.

Side note: Being avid Rocky & Bullwinkle fans, we were amazed to actually locate the fabled intersection of Moose & Squirrel in Banff ;)
